Eliminating Dangerous Ticks
In many areas of the USA you can't think "outdoors" without also
thinking about ticks. If you have indoor-outdoor pets you might
think about ticks being indoors as well! Ticks are bad enough just for
their bite, but they are vectors of nasty diseases. They act like
living hypodermic needles to innoculate their hosts with misery or even
death. Not just your pets... people as well.

24 million year old tick in amber
Ticks are arachnids, which are a very ancient 8 legged family of
creatures also including: spiders, scorpions, mites (including
chiggers). Hard bodied ticks such as seed, dog and deer ticks, have
fossils dating back 35 million years. A soft body tick was found in amber 90 million years old...
probably from a bird, but that was the age of dinosaurs. Can't
you just picture a Tyrannosaurus rex scratching away at his neck like a
cat! There would be Richter 3.0 earthquakes! Obviously, ticks are here to stay and we are
stuck with them, so we need to cope the best we can. Here is a wikipedia
article about ticks... very good coverage!

This is another great source of information.

The only way to truly control tick problems is to eliminate the
ticks. This is not easy due to their toughness and life cycles.
Mammal wildlife hosts the ticks and then the ticks drop from them
between host feedings and later acquires another host... maybe Fido,
Fluffy, little Junior or you. If you keep the host wildlife away from
your grounds area, the ticks cannot drop off and infest the
grounds. It isn't likely you can keep all wildlife away, but key
wildlife reduction equals tick reduction.
As mentioned in the Wikipedia article, Guineafowl can help eliminate ticks by hunting them down. Although not
mentioned, chickens do a good job as well in mowed and open wooded
areas. Letting them free range your grounds should help eliminate
tick populations locally. Of course this isn't practical everywhere,
but it works where it makes sense.
Eliminating excess presence of the tick hosting mammal wildlife and
protecting free ranging helper birds will help in eliminating local
tick populations.
Phantom wildlife deterrents have a dual benefit towards tick
elimination. They discourage several species of wildlife which are well
known contributors to dispersing ticks in areas they browse and
roam. Deer (and relations), Coyote, Fox, Raccoon, Skunk, Opossum,
Bobcat and various others. Additionally, using Phantom wildlife
deterrents keeps the above mentioned predators away from the area,
which in turn protects free ranging birds that clean up any ticks that
do come into the grounds. Note that this technique is
completely without the use of poisons or insecticides, and does not hurt any
animals. The deterrents also protect your pets from direct assaults by
Coyote, Bobcat and Fox! ...and disease exposure from
Raccoon. Multiple benefits from an easy economical system!
This fenceless deterrent technique can be further combined with others such as
the deer mouse treatment mentioned in the above Wikipedia
article. Periodically live cage trapping of any; yard
bunnies, squirrels, chipmunks etc; is a good measure as well.
They can be sprayed with "cat flea and tick spray" insecticide while in
the trap cage, and released again or relocated.
Tick control tip... When you pull ticks off of your pet, the ticks should be
killed in some manner. Tossing live ticks away will result in them
hatching into thousands of tiny nymph ticks that will get on you and
your pets. They do not die just because you remove them.
